What a great season from a team nobody expected to go far. Last year's team was so much more talented (especially at the plate) than this year's team but they didn't get it done last year and they did this year and you can't take that away from these kids. They did a great job fighting and scrapping. Wilson hasn't played for over a month and comes up in a CWS game and puts them up with a shot down the RF line. Great stuff!
Now, just a few questions.
1. Why was it not made obvious for Lambson as to how they wanted to pitch to Rupp?
2. Why did nobody go out to talk to Lambson after Rupp went yard?
3. Why is a freshman that was already rocked by the same hitters on Tuesday trying to get the last three outs?
I think Pat Murphy is a great coach and hindsight is always 20/20 and I'm not in the dugout but some stuff that went on just doesn't make any sense to me. How does this team go from having monsters like Wallace, Davis, and Roling in the lineup to having virtually no power in the lineup at all? If not for Calhoun's offensive explosion, the Devils would have been two and a BBQ easily. I think Ramirez is the only other Devil to hit a HR in their four games. I think Kipnis went 5 for 15 but did he even have an RBI? This team did a lot with a little. Considering Texas' crappy play, it was a frustrating loss but let's face it, this team was not the most talented in the world and did the best with what they have. Now the key is for the coaching staff to recruit their butts off, add some pop and some speed to the lineup, and add two or three power arms to the rotation. Don't be afraid to take a chance on a kid who can throw hard but can't find the zone and doesn't work as hard as he needs to just yet. There was a kid like that in high school four years ago named Stephen Strausburg. Wouldn't it have been nice to have him in maroon and gold this year?
