I think the Devils are in - barring a complete collapse against lesser competition in the next week +. but based on other sites - boyd's world, baseballamerica, etc., I don't see them hosting a regional, which is very sad. Packard deserves/d better.
I am encouraged that the Devils are appearing to fire on all cylinders lately. Too bad Lilek did not get the win last night, but fielding has dramatically improved (thanks DS), hitting has as well (thanks DS and others), and pitching seems to be much more consistent.
I am more worried about where ASU will be sent. Probably a #2 seed whereever, but there are some scary possibilities, if they stay in the West.
If I recall correctly, for the first time in a long time, the NCAA did not place any PAC softball teams in the paired regionals. (I guess the folks on the east coast were too giddy about placing 11 SEC teams into the tournament. Really??? PAC 12 got 5)
Finally, I have always like Phx Muni as well - but from a site line perspective, I think Packard is a better venue for the fans. But having said that, I still recall the gamesPhx Giants/Firebirds, where you could easily get seats along the foul lines, and often talk with the players. I think ASU has a chance to bring really good vibes with the move, the placement of the commemorative signs along the outfield and other "branding" opportunities.
does anyone know - will they be able to sell beer there? (cue the Chris Farley line "that would be AWESOME!"). I suspect the NCAA would not allow.
all in all - with the bats coming alive, starting pitching appearing to be able to go into the late innings and the improvement in fielding (do I have this right? no errors in last 4 games??), this could be a formidable dark horse team for the tournament.
