: : With the wolves nipping at his heels Esmay resigned today. He probably was left with no choice I'm guessing. He didn't have the success we would have hoped for but he conducted himself with a helluva lot more class than many "die hard" Devil fans have during this past season. I can't believe the level of dislike toward him especially after the season. I hope good candidates aren't scared off by the way his ass was unceremoniously run out of town after making the regionals. I know a regional appearance & done won't get it around here & I get that but it is total bullshit how he was treated on his way out.
: : Well Ray get out your checkbook because some young up & comer or flash from the past ain't gonna get it here in "The most coveted ncaa baseball coaching job in the country" (at least that seems to be the general opinion over on the Scout Board). As far as how I feel about it I'm left with the wise words of my dear old dad who from time to time would tell me "be careful what you wish for, it might come true".
: : Good luck Tim I hope you land on your feet, you will always be a good old Devil to me.
: Tim Esmay always conducted himself with class. Some other school will be fortunate to hire him. He was just not the right guy for ASU.
: I trust that Ray Anderson understands how critically important this hire will be.
: In addition, with the roster expected to be here, this is not a rebuilding project. No need to rush, but we need a really good selection to be made.
:: I think Jim Schlossnagle from TCU would be a great hire. Used to be the head guy at UNLV so he has west coast ties. Need to hire someone who has experienced the big time and he certainly has. The one thing here is what motivation would he have to leave TCU? He would have to have a pretty poor stretch to get axed there considering what he's built. They have a great on campus facility and he gets paid very well. Plus they are now in one of the Power 5 conferences so money won't be an issue. I also think bringing back Murph would be awesome. Big thing is to start paying assistant coaches what they need to and bring in a big time staff. Knutson needs to go and they need to bring Travis Jewett back as recruiting coordinator and pay him some big time money. He is a west coast guy and I doubt he is at Vandy for any reasons other than great HC to learn under, great program to coach for, and he's getting well paid.
I also hope Coach Esmay lands somewhere else. He did not deserve to be forced to resign. Unless there were internal issues that nobody knows about, I can't see how you can force a guy to resign with what he's done the last 5 years. The guy had a winning overall and conference record in the year the Devils were banned from the postseason. That is a really tough thing to do when you know from the start of the season you have nothing to play for but pride.
No sense in worrying about it now though. The interest from certain coaches and who we end up hiring is going to be very telling about the athletic department's committment to the baseball program and will really show whether or not ASU is still considered a premier college baseball job or not. It's definitely in the top 20 but is it still a top 10 job?????
