: : Excellent article on HC Possibilities. See link.
: This article makes it sound like ASU is going to take the "cheap" route with this hire. I hope that Metcalfe is just speculating based on past hires and is not commenting based on inside knowledge. When Anderson let Esmay go, he stated that his expectations are that ASU remain an elite program. You need an elite coach for that. If all he wants is a respectable coach at a bargain salary, he already had that in Esmay. No need to make a change. Being cheap with salaries already cost us Travis Jewett as our top assistant. If you are really an elite program, assistant coaches don't leave to make lateral moves. This needs to be a good hire. End of story.
:: Couldn't agree more. If you're gonna take the cheap route what the hell was the point of forcing a guy like Esmay to resign? At least he was a known quantity and whatever people have to say, the guy won...period. Yes, the program was on a little bit of a downward swing but it's not like we've taken a nosedive like U of A did towards the end of Kindal's career and all of Stitt's tenure as HC there. Three of the best pitchers in the country are coming back next year. And honestly, these guys have better stuff than almost any pitchers who pitched on the CWS teams from 2005 and beyond. The athletic department needs to get the best man for the job here. If that means that person happens to be a little cheaper then fine...but pay the assistant coaches well in that case if you can find the right guy and he is OK with making $250 or $300. I know Murph made $300k so Esmay saved the athletic dept about half a million over his tenure. There is absolutely no reason that ASU cannot hire a head coach for $400k per year and pay two paid asst. coaches $100k - $150k. I don't think people need to get caught up in the former big leaguer deal either. Kids don't give a .... about that, they care if their coach can make them better and develop them to become a pro baseball player. If it only mattered that a coach played in the big leagues and how good he was than the University of Nebraska should be crowned national champs every year because Darin Erstad was a great big league player. His name has been mentioned and he would be awesome but he ain't leaving his alma mater. I don't think Stankiewicz is the guy. I think you need to make a big hire and you need to bring Schlossnagle and his whole staff to Tempe.
