Based on the comments that Ray Anderson has been making about baseball since he arrived, I think that there is a good chance that baseball will get a good budget for assistant salaries. I look forward to Smith's press conference to see if he addresses what his staff is going to look like. It wouldn't be a reach to try to pull an assistant out of Fullerton. Some of those guys may want to get out of there anyway. The findings of their internal investigation of Vanderhook were released yesterday and it wasn't pretty. I'm amazed he still has a job there.
: Tracy Smith is going to do a good job. After hearing him speak before, I really like his philosophy. He keeps things relatively simple and expects his players to bust their butts. I know that he really believes in the weight room. With the bbcor bats and the move to Muni putting us in a larger ballpark, there probably won't be as many home runs as in the past but ASU barely hit any this year playing 70% of their games at Packard. That still doesn't mean you can't develop a tough, physical team by getting them in the weight room. And some guys still can get the ball out of the yard. Look at the kid at Kentucky this year. Over 20 HRs this year. I think a big thing is going to be what kind of budget Smith is given for his assistant coaches salaries and who he brings in. Don't know what his salary is but I'm assuming it's close, if not over, to $400k. That means assistants could legitimately be making $200k if he has the budget to offer that. I think he's probably smart enough to know that it would be a good thing to bring in a big name assistant/recruiting coordinator with heavy west coast ties. I really liked what TCU did in hiring Cal State Fullerton pitching coach Kirk Saarloos a couple years ago. He was a CSF alum and is a former big leaguer but TCU threw a big chunk of money at him and he left his school. With CSF not being a BCS level school, it's tough for them to pay their assistants what they need to pay them to keep them. Same reason Horton left CSF for Oregon...money. If good decisions are made this is going to turn out to be a really good hire.
