He may have already made three trips in the game as they were in the 14th. It just seemed strange that with bases loaded, bottom of the 14th, that someone, even the catcher would not have pulled everyone together and calmed the pitcher down. Especially, for a pitcher whose last outing ended with taking a line drive to the face. Hoping for bigger and better things next year.
: : Two trips by the coach in college and then you have to pull the pitcher. Smith was completely absent in the 14th? It was very strange and unacceptable for a D1 coach, or even a little league coach.

: : : : No trip to the mound to settle your pitcher after hitting a guy and walking another. Pathetic.

: : : Did he have any trips left without pulling him? As a high school baseball coach, I know that you only have 3 trips to the mound to talk to pitcher's without making a change every trip after that, I did not stay up to watch the game last night after it went into extra innings. Therefore, I don't know if he had used all of his trips or not, but I'm guessing he had if they were in the 14th inning. If he goes to the mound at that point, he has to make a pitching change. As the late Ernie Banks would say, let's play two! Go Sun Devils!

: TO Devil,
: The rule in high school is that you get 3 trips for the game, without pulling the pitcher, you have to pull the pitcher on the second trip in the same inning. I believe that's the same rule for both college and professional baseball? My point is, if they were in the 14th inning, ASU probably had already exhausted their 3 free trips without pulling a pitcher. The next trip to the mound by a coach would've meant bringing in another pitcher. Coach Smith may not have had much of an option in the 14th inning. One way or the other, there is no question that losing Saturday night's game meant disaster for a pitching staff that was not very deep at ASU. Go Sun Devils!
