Have to believe it's because Lin's bat has been hot. Smith wanted to get Austin's bat in the line up and see some live pitching as the DH. Maybe also give Ferri some rest before the end of the season.
Unfortunately, Lin (who I think is a great kid and an excellent hitter) does not have the strongest arm at catcher. Stanford got a couple of steals on pitchouts Friday night. Ferri does a good job behind the dish as he showed again last night.
