who happened to be one of the all-time best college baseball coaches. He had an incredible group of superstar players. Just to name a few; Rick Monday to Barry Bonds to Bob Horner to Sal Bando to Gary Gentry to Jeff Pentland to. Reggie Jackson. The list is one of the best if not the very best in college baseball.
His record speaks for itself. What impressed me, among many things, was Bobby Winkles the person. He was a gregarious fun loving man. Everyone liked Him. He liked everyone. His memory must have been excellent. I took a Methods of Coaching Baseball class of his, with several other students. After not seeing him for several years, I ran into him after an ASU baseball game. He stopped and talked to me for several minutes. After all those years, Coach Winkles remembered my name and my plans when I got out of college. He ask me if I ended up coaching basketball, which Was my plan. How important that kind of memory, remembering people, must have been. He was an impressive man. He will be missed.
