In the middle of the night, somewhere in the middle of Tennessee, Billy Donovan and Herb Sendek drove through the darkness.
The two were then assistants on Rick Pitino's staff at Kentucky, returning on a seven-hour drive from watching future UK guard Tony Delk play in a high school game in Memphis. Sendek had to catch a flight from Lexington, Ky., to New Jersey the next morning.
"We were constantly splashing water on our face, trying to stay awake," Sendek said. "And we were always looking for a Dairy Queen."
Florida will play at Arizona State tonight in the National Invitation Tournament quarterfinals, with the winner moving on to reach the NIT semifinals next week in New York City. The Gators are taking the NIT run seriously. Florida arrived in Arizona late Sunday night to get an extra day of practice to become accustomed to the three-hour time difference.
