I'll admit the Syracuse situation popped into my head as they are well known for their tenatious 2-3 zone. But I don't follow Syracuse basketball enough to know whether they ever play man-to-man. If Boeheim stayed in his 2-3 zone while Villanova went 11-21 from three and basically knocked his team off the NCAA bubble, then I would criticize him as well.
My point is not that I think ASU's zone defense is a bad defense. On the contrary I think it's very effective and have no problem with ASU using it as long as it is working. My issue is that we did not seem to have any alternative look to give a team when it was not working.
This point was also not meant to say I think Herb is a bad coach, rather I believe he got more out of this team in the past two years than most coaches would have. I just feel in this one area he should have used some man-to-man defense to counter when teams were shooting threes at a high rate.
