: I was very intrigued by Leon Rice and thought he was the best candidate for the job. Not sure he would take the job as it is tough situation to walk into. Guess we will have to see if the Hurley experiment is a success.
: On the other topic about "taking care" of the family of 5 star players...why do you think that no one has outed the practice? I completely believe that it is what happens, just interested in how it is kept hush hush. Will try to check out the book you recommended. Thanks for the tip.
In most cases you will notice the fan bases are not in major metro areas where there is media competition. The media has to be a part of the team or you are out of a job. Only if national media would take an interest would there be chance this could be exposed. The NCAA only makes money from March Madness. They get none from football. They would not like to lose the "golden egg" that pays their salaries. Technically the NCAA is a volunteer organization that the member schools are supposed to police themselves. Most penalties include the wording "lack of institutional control" ie failure to police itself when the school is penalized.
I also want to say I have nothing against Bobby Hurley. Just thing about this, if Jack Murphy at NAU had won the Big Sky and lost in the first round of the Dance would there be the same excitment to hire him. I know the Hurley name is what has people excited. A great college player does not always make a great college coach. See Clyde Drexler at U of Houston. When you fire Herb Sendek the expectation is that you would do it to better the program. I do not see that. The goal is to be in the Dance almost every year and be in the top half of the conference all the time. The programs that do that pay their coaches $2 mil or more. Bobby Hurley went from a contract of $551 thousand to what Herb was making $1.2 mil. He doubled his salary. Anderson got boosters to pay off Herb's contract but not to pay the extra to hire a coach who has a proven record doing that.
: here wasn't much interest other than Lavin- no thank you. IMHO, He is best second choice out there and time will tell if its good.
: : Here are some of the names on the list I would have contacted. Most would have said no but you should check to see. Tony Bennett UVA a no since Anderson would not spent what he would want. Scott Drew Baylor Maybe a no but you should ask. His brother Bryce Drew Valpo. Been a head coach longer than Hurley. Josh Pasner Memphis His former team mates might not want him to go to ASU but a call would have been worth it. Leon Rice Boise St. He was Mark Few's top assistant before he went to Boise St. He won the Mt West with less name players than SDSU & UNLV. That's a sample of the dozen or so players on my list.
