: So I looked at what the difference is between ASU in the non-conference versus the conference season. What has happened? I think everyone would agree the difference is our offense. So I took the stats from the 6 games we played in the non-con against legit Power 5 schools. I did include San Diego State.
: These are our main offensive stat averages per game:
: FG: 29-58 (50%); 3PT: 10-24 (40%); FT 22-28 (79%)
: Here are the same stats for conference games:
: FG: 27-62 (44%); 3PT: 8-24 (33%); FT 16-22 (73%)
: In each category there is not a huge difference, but with decent margins in all three it adds up to a pretty big difference. Basically if we would have just shot the same % in each category we would have averaged 11 more points per game. And since our largest margin of defeat has been 9 points, we could have used those extra 11 ppg.
: And clearly the games being called differently in the PAC-12 has impacted us a great deal. We shoot 6 fewer free throws. And it is not because we are relying more on the 3 point shot as our attempts per game in that area are identical. And I think us not getting the calls has also affected how we play. Our shots in the paint are missing a lot more and I surmise it may be due to us not having the same confidence we will get the call, so we try to avoid contact and got off balance and out of control.
: I hope we cam turn it around these last 4 games and start playing with the confidence that got us out to the 12-0 start.
Good analysis. Thanks.
