The Washington Post ran this story outlining the FBI investigation into BB Play for Pay. What a mess. Too much money. The money attracts all sorts of characters. Lawyers look for loopholes. Schools sort of turn their backs as long as sports revenue keeps piling in.
How it all started in the 1970s - a Nike exec said the NCAA wouldn't allow him to pay the players, so he paid the coaches. Then the schools wanted their share - free equipment and endorsement money. Now TV contracts and shoe company money calculates to more than a $ million per scholarship player. Except the players don't get the money. So lawyers are now defending payments to players as signing bonuses that are only illegal because of the NCAA rules.
Too much money. To many unsavory characters. Too many lawyers. BTW, now high schools and HS coaches are receiving shoe money. And 14 year old players are recruited to play at high schools using the right shoes to link them to similar shoe colleges. The death of pure sports.
