Mello does not have a pro future as a 6’8” center. Likely he got that feedback in the time he was looking at the draft. All he has to show for 3 years at ASU is time at a position he won’t play at the next level. If he stayed, he’d be playing center again. He’d have a great year winning college ball, but that could hurt, or even kill, his pro prospects. By leaving to a school that promises him playing time at the 4, with a coach he feels close to, he improves the odds that he’ll get a chance to go pro. It’s a long-term play that makes sense.
As a fan of ASU, I hate the move. As a fan of Mello, I say best of luck!
