Coaches probably look at it based on how many yards are needed too. 3rd down % w/3 yards to go, 2 yards to go, etc.
The higher your 3rd down % I suppose the more conservative you can call 1st & 2nd down plays, which of course probably results in more 3rd down attempts but a higher conversion % with less distance on 3rd down, helping the %, but does not necessarily mean you are more likely to sustain drives.
ASU & Wazzu have essentially the same 3rd down conversion %. I have not seen the numbers, but I'll bet they convert a lot more 1st & 2nd downs than us, so are in 3rd less of the time. They also probably have further to go on 3rd on average, since they are more aggressive on 1st & second down play calling, so are more likely to have a 3rd & 10 after 2 incomplete passes.
