Yes, but I remember many of years in the 1980's...

...when ASU dominated the game statistically and lost to the U of A. 1984, down in Tucson for one. ASU turned it over 5 times, and lost 10-16.

1985, is the most "pissed off" I've ever been after an ASU loss (Yes, even more pissed than the 1997 Rose Bowl loss to Ohio State). ASU completely dominated this game, but an Anthony Parker fumbled punt (caused by Byron Evans), that went backwards 15 yards for a Wildcat to fall on it for their only touchdown of the game. That cut ASU's lead to 13-10, late in the 3rd quarter. Up to that point and time, the Wildcats could barely move the football on ASU's defense. Kent Bostrom missed a chip shot 22 yard field goal, then we got Max Zendejas-ed. He kicked something like a 55 yard field goal to tie the game at 13-13. John Cooper, who knew a tie would send ASU to their first Rose Bowl, but remembered how unpopular Darryl Rodgers was with ASU fans after he "settled" for a tie with UCLA in 1983, decided to drive to win the game. Jeff Van Raaphorst got hit and fumbled. The U of A ran the clock down and Max Zendejas kicked like a 30 yard field goal to put the Wildcats in the lead at 13-16. ASU still had some time left on the clock, but V-Rapp threw a pick over the middle to a guy named, Chuck Cecil. ASU had well over 300 yards of offense, the U of A had about 150 yards of offense. ASU had 4 turnovers, including the 3 I talked about in the last 20 minutes of the game. A bend but don't break defense, and special teams won the game for the U of A. They celebrated in our stadium like they were going to the Rose Bowl. I'm still pissed about it!

So, don't feel guilty about winning the game the other day. There have been plenty of games during the 1980's & 90's, where ASU won all over the field/ stats sheet, except the most important place (the SCOREBOARD). Also, if you want to see an ASU 4th quarter melt down that was similar to the U of A's the other day, then look at the 1995 game at Sun Devil Stadium. ASU led the Wildcats 28-14, with about 7 and a half minutes to go. ASU's defense then let Dan White (U of A's quarterback) drive them 80 yards in about 3 minutes to score a touchdown. That made the score 28-21. ASU then got the ball at their own 20, got a holding penalty which moved them to their 10 yard line, then on something like 3rd & 18, from their 12 yard line, Jake Plummer dropped back to pass, got hit by the Tedy Brucshi guy, fumbled, another Wildcat defensive lineman scooped and scored from about 10 yards out to tie the game at 28-28. ASU got the ball back, when 3 and out, punted. The U of A drove the ball into field goal range, and kicked a last second field goal to shock ASU with 17 points in the last few minutes to win the game. ASU had "snatched defeat from the jaws of victory."

So, don't feel guilty, don't apologize, because ASU has SCOREBOARD, 41-40. Believe me, I took A LOT of s**t from U of A fans during that god awful period from 1982-1998, when ASU went 3-13-1 in the Territorial Cup Games. F them! Go Sun Devils!
