The Rose Bowl is one of the most prestigious bowls of all time. The Granddaddy. Why does every PAC coach set that as a team goal? Why do we lament not going to the Rose Bowl since 1997? Could Utah have pulled off a miracle finish? They will never know. We will never know.
This is not about the people sitting in the stands. The ideal of sports is the ability to prove yourself on the field of competition. The reward is the win and the recognition that comes with it. These players did not care if they were playing in front of 100,000 people in a stadium or competing in an empty lot. When officials interfere, they taint the purity and destroy the essence of the game.
This is not about your interest in either team. This is about 105 members of the Utah football team that worked their butts off for years to get to this place. This is about 105 members of the Utah football team that overcame the adversity of losing star players and still found a way to win, as a team, to get to this moment. This is about 105 members of the Utah football team that had a chance to achieve their goal of being the FIRST Utah team to ever play in the Rose Bowl. Were they good enough to achieve their goal? They will never know. We will never know because lame officiating once again may have altered the outcome. 105 members of the Utah football team will have to live with that.
And what are the consequences for the officials and for the PAC front office? There are no consequences. Today is business as usual. That hurts just as much as watching them insult the game Friday night.
Yeah, I care a lot.
