A quick flyover shows that we have an average "star rating" of about 3.35, so the needle has not moved the way Ray inferred that it would. Maybe next year. But I tend to look deeper into the class. Here is my first impressions (remember, recruiting is still open for business.).
Someone posted that Pierce was the only good recruiter. Not true. Gonzales did a good job and I think Likens was the only OC in the nation to land 3 QBs from the ESPN Top 150. The "gang recruiting" also seemed to be effective. Edwards was an effective draw, but I am not too sure how many deals his presence closed.
The recruiting team did make an impact on the California talent pool. A better year of field results should harvest more blue chip kids in future years.
The class filled some holes on defense and added O-line depth.
The class failed to fill some holes on defense and failed to produce any spectacular scoring threat on offense. No Harry or DJ Foster in this class.
Not much improvement in speed. The DBs and WRs are 4.6 to 4.7 40 kids. Linemen all have posted 5.1+ sec 40 times. Daniels 4.67 sec 40 is not real fast, but it beats Manny's 4.85, but the kid better concentrate on passing and not high school scrambling.
No WOW factor as a catalyst to attract additional blue chip players. No top AZ players to attract fans to the games.
Still too much competing with mid-level conferences for players more than P5 schools.
Cooper was the only DT. We were his only D1 offer. Lack on an interior force and depth can kill any defense.
Where are the linebackers?
A few years ago I did a study of star recruits vs win percentage. The result showed that teams that PLAYED their 4/5 star kids won. Florida was the poster child for talent mismanagement with 7 ESPN QBs. It inflated their class ranks, but not their wins. ASU once again has three 4-star QBs. One will play. That brings the class' effective rating down to about 3.2 from 3.35.
Players and who we beat to get them.
