Of course many reasons and each has their own. Here is what one of the top HS football coaches told me directly when asked that exact question. He said, Itís hard for ASU to compete with all the national exposure the big boys get (one of the reasonís edwards was hired I believe). ESPN is all about the SEC and a few other select schools as we all know, Kids want their name and plays on national TV, they (mistakingly in my opinion) think that national TV will get them drafted. Bottom line is they want the fame. I believe him, I also think our time zone really hurts us (low exposure), I think our lame attendance hurts us, and I think since so many people are from someplace else that we donít have the kids loyality (they donít grow up ASU fans), even when they do grow up ASU fans we often canít beat the perceived glory of playing for the big boys. I wonder at the end of the day how much the heat is a factor? I know other coaches play it up, not sure if itís a real decision point or not. I donít see this changing unless Edwards can get the NCAA to allow us to draft HS players, or we earn the respect of the football world so we get the exposure that drives the kids. Still strange to me we lost that Texas kid on the last day (first they offered), why would he switch like that if not for the fame of playing for the Sooners or itís his dream team?
