with my 14 year old daughter, she spent a week there for lacrosse camp. Since she was small, always went to junior events, cheered for ASU, we have friends who work in the athletic department, my wife and I both ASU grads, wife taught there for a year, her lacrosse coach played lacrosse with ASU during their club years.
Now she wants to go to Eugene. Granted, she hasn't been there during winter, toured the Corvallis campus and bought some knee socks in the bookstore (because of the orange and black) on the day they won the CWS, and was unimpressed with the school except that she liked the classic campus look similar to that appearing on 'Monsters, Inc.'
Oregon has constantly changed coaches since Chip Kelly left, so no established star attraction at head coach, and any team that finishes 8-4 (including a loss to a nonbowl eligible caliber AU) but finishes top 10 in recruiting has figured out how to use its money to create an experience for recruit prospects.
Just as an ASU alumn visiting the Eugene campus, the blinged out look of it struck me as 'Yip - this is where young people want to be...this is what they imagine leaving home for college looks like'. They have taken the practical aspects of college (think parents) and made an emotional experience for the kids/young adults. It makes everywhere else look tired, 'it's been done', and worn. If they go to Oregon, it will be fun. They get convinced that if they go almost anywhere else, who knows if it will be fun, and will anyone at the school even care? The money has not just transformed the athletic facilities, but has made its way through the entire campus and the SURROUNDING AREA. Not even half a day's drive to-and-back from the beautiful coast.
