I often wondered how football became so fixated on 40 times. It seems that the pro scouts thought it up as a gage for potential draft choice use on special teams. The average punt is about 40 yards and the average hang time is about 4.5 seconds. Therefore, combine times of 4.5 seconds or better became the gold standard for mid to late round players. The all-time best combine time was 4.22 by John Ross of Washington, but Bo Jackson claimed to have been timed in 4.13 sec at Auburn and had been officially clocked at 4.18 sec. If you want a dual threat QB, look to Lamar Jackson as a role model. He ran a 4.34 at the Louisville Test Day, but then did not run at the combine. Compare that to Manny's 4.87 sec 40 and you can see why Manny was jumping over tacklers in front of him and not running away from tacklers behind him.

Here are the average NFL Combine 40 times by position. I posted the times because these are actually college players that want to turn pro. The times are a good litmus test for recruiting comparison. Notice that the WR and DB times look like the arms race. As one position speed improves, the opposing position must match it. I am glad that we signed 5'11"168 lb Jordan Clark out of Baton Rouge. He will be competitive at 4.6 sec. Still, I wish we could have sign another Baton Rouge kid, Derek Stingley. Stinkley, 6'1" 193, 4.3 sec looked to be perfect for the Tillman position. There is a reason why LSU offered the one local kid (and signed him) and did not offer the other. Maybe in future years, Herm Edward can work his magic and will get the likes of both kids.

Well, the house has filled with the aroma of Mrs Big Ron's homemade Italian cookies, family secret spaghetti sauce and manicotti. (I think that she is trying to clog the only good cardiac artery I have left.) But before I run off ---

Merry Christmas to all my Cactus Ranch friend. And a special Merry Christmas to Larry for all these years of fun and entertainment you have provided ASU fans.
