Strong disagree. The cupboard was bare when Erickson left. We anticipated one of the poorest seasons in memory. Graham came in and (1) got things out of guys that nobody expected and (2) rode the wave of new-schemes without tape for opponents, and game planning that caught everyone off guard, until it didn't.
There is a fallacy in sports that the W-L record accurately describes how good a team is, and then that gets imputed to how good the talent is, or how good the coach is. W-L is just how many games you won, for whatever reason. The team getting a nasty case of gas and runs from the Friday night dinner might result in a L that's the program's fault, but whatever "percentage" of that W or L is the fault of the coach/QB/whoever's becomes 100% in hindsight. The beauty of sports is that W-L is not talent or ability, it just correlates with it. I think that 2012 team, if still under Erickson goes 1-11 (I mean, beat the rats!), but everything came together in an amazing way that made the 8-5 season really fun, because the team and coach transformed before our eyes, starting with TK at Camp T.
