It's about the super rich (Lori Laughlin's husband is worth $80) having kids get into prestigious schools. The truth is, that at these income levels, the kids don't need to learn anything in college anyway. Their path is already laid before them due to their families' wealth and power.
There was a study recently that showed rich, white, males gained nothing from attending Ivies relative to their peers that didn't. Same outcomes but they got some nicely framed diplomas to show off. The students who did benefit the most were underprivileged people of color. One theory as to why wasn't based on learning more at the Ivies, but rather that the Ivies gave them a "stamp of approval" relative to their peers.
Getting back to this case, it's just a matter of bragging rights and meeting expectations. Unfortunately, that comes at the expense of the less fortunate who would have a MUCH greater benefit from taking that spot.
