While the QB is reading the LBs and safeties to determine a play, the center is also reading defense and the QB to call compatible line blocking assignments. At the same time, he is focusing on the snap count and his ball snapping technique. The QB sticks with the called play. The Center, is still watching defensive motion to pick up stunts and accordingly modify blocking assignments.
Plus, line technique is as equally important as a lineman’s size and athleticism. Most linemen specialize in left or right side because technique requires muscle memory for consistency and fast snap reaction time. First step/hand placements are different for left and right side blocking. The Center position is unique because he needs both left and right side technique. He must be equally effective going either way - speed, impact, hand placement. AND, he must master the difference of being covered by a huge NT or field blocking a speedy LB when he is uncovered.
We have not had a primo center since Mike Pollak. Mike was a joy to watch. He was a quick 6’3” 300 lb. He could pull like a guard and lead block for edge runs, run down LB and easily pick up blitzing linemen. He was also strong enough to handle NTs. Cabral might reach this level of play before he hangs up his Sun Devil cleats.
