I was dubbed the next Jim Palmer as a frosh by Gonnerman. Probably kiss of death. My sisters 6&7 yrs older than me were good friends with the Ryan bros whose sister was Palmer's HS sweetheart and first wife. After Palmer shutout Dodgers in '66 series for Orioles sweep, Jim sent a signed Dodgers baseball to his Bros in-law - who promptly gave it to this snot nosed 4th grader. I still have that ball tucked away, complete with LA Dodgers decal and dated with lacquer over it. The Ryans (Mike and Danny), along with the Eaton Bros (Stormy and Bingo), were great gymnasts - All-State. Stormy was the guy doing handsprings at halftime of football games from the goal line all the way out to mid-field....in a complete Beaver suit with large head. Coached Pan-Am US gymnasts and Air Force Academy and met untimely death learning to fly. Theses guys were all amazing athletes. Why I pay tribute to them. Maybe you knew them?
Joe Kush was still there when I came through SHS. I barrel chested comrade in my yr ('75) who was more than a little rough around the edges got into it with Joe Kush in the weight room, getting him kicked off the football team. Just like him to challenge someone like Joe Kush. This guy ended up breaking legs for the mob,so the story goes. Not much of a tribute there. Funny how you can be friends with someone, and yet be scared of what they might do at any time.
