Decades ago I was recruited by Herman Chanen for volunteer work for the ASU Research Park and the West Campus. My dealings allowed my to meet some interesting characters within both ASU and the AZ Board of Regents.
On one occasion I was reminiscing about the Golden Age of ASU athletics. Kush, Winkles, Wulk, Castillo - put ASU on the national map. I wondered out loud why no famous members of those teams had been recruited to coach at ASU. After all, many became professional coaches, HOF members and national figures.
The answer I got surprised me. NEVER!
The new school officials and the BOR hated these coaches because they had more access to the G. Homer Durham, the press and school funds than the college heads. So now ASU sports had to learn its place after these icons were gone. School officials were not about to bring a Danny White to Tempe to start another dynasty. Fat Lever might be good enough to have his number retired both at ASU and in Denver but he was not welcome at ASU as a coach. Sal Bando? 4-time All Star, 3 World Series rings, Brewers executive - Sorry, one of Winkles' boys - not welcome.
The ASU master plan has been to go generic. Plain Vanilla. Be good enough to not embarrass. Make enough money to pay its own way. But don't get in the way of ASU establishing itself as a legitimate academic based university. The Sports-Party school image will never again be tolerated. Knock down Fraternity Row while you are at it as well.
