Marsh is clearly the best starter for ASU, but in prior years, he would not be the #1.
CTS has had 5 years to develop pitchers. He has failed, and at times he has not even had a pitching coach. By any measure, Tim Esmay's program was more competitive.
The current squad is short several players - either CTS chased players away, or simply could not attract enough players. A D1 team can have 35 players, yet only 11.7 scholarships are available and cannot be spread over more than 27 players. ASU presently has 27 players. We are "down" 8 bodies. That is why we had a pitcher playing in the outfield today, and a reserve catcher - who I think has had 8 AB's this season - pinch hitting.
In years past, ASU baseball recruited itself. Players sent in tapes, resumes, etc., and showed up on campus at their own cost to visit. I think CTS has now created an atmosphere and "legacy" for ASU, where players simply will go elsewhere. The "aura" of ASU baseball has been squandered.
ASU needs to fire CTS, but unfortunately, this cannot occur prior to the NLI day for baseball. The current class is "ok", but essential in order to try to preserve the verbal commits. the MLB draft is next week - and many players will await that event, before finalizing a commitment.
Presumably, we lose Bishop, Marsh, and Romero (the only true Senior), so assuming we can get more than 3 players - the squad should be closer to "max" in terms of size.
Pat Casey or Dustin Pedroia would have enough name/branding cred to get the program restored.
I am incredibly depressed.
