It was not the major factor but it played a role in at least 2 of the 4 lost fumbles. The discomfort certainly didn't help either team's passing game. It affected both teams.
With that said your point is well taken. Their wealth of talented and experienced linemen on both sides of the ball were the difference. This should be our primary recruiting focus.
I think some of the fans are a little too tough on Likens. He just didn't have enough options to overcome the overwhelming mismatch on the LOS. Last year we had more OL size, depth, and especially experience. He didn't cause the penalties that set us back at critical moments where it looked like the offense may have had an opportunity to gain some momentum.
We're very young and inexperienced. We're down FIFTEEN scholarships. 15!!! This is uncharted territory, man. We're playing true frosh at LT, RG, and QB. These are critical positions. Our highly rated kicker quit the team for some reason and our replacement kickoff and long FG specialist were out for the game. This was a road game against arguably the best PAC-12 team on their turf in cold, driving rain. And yes, they are loaded on both OL and DL. In spite of this we were only down 11 points and had a chance to win in the 4th qtr.
We've recruited some great talent but they need to develop. I don't think size is always the most important thing. Experience, depth, quickness, technique, scheme, and unit cohesiveness and communication are all just as important. I think what this coaching staff has done given the circumstances is laudable.
We all wanted a big win but in the bigger picture things are looking up.
