But criticism is better when accompanied by positive suggestions for the alternatives available that aren't currently being employed. As I mentioned, I personally would prefer to see more tight end involvement in the passing game to keep defenses more honest. That's my suggestion, however, if that means worse pass protection (if that's even possible) I'm not sure this would work any better. The few TE passes I've seen this year have worked because they seem to be wide open. On the other hand a couple have been dropped (without mentioning names). Keeping more blockers in and sending fewer receivers into patterns has it's downside as well. Fewer targets for JD and for the D to cover. It's just a tough conundrum when we don't yet have the experience, size, and depth available to properly provide satisfactory time for our true frosh QB and still utilize all the other skill positions. If we could make fewer mistakes, especially penalties, a few plays could make all the difference in a game like this weeks. Yes, that's part of coaching but we've never played this many frosh and operated with this few scholarship players.
It's a frustrating year and I understand the anger and frustration but there are real handicaps that explain a lot of the problems. I think Likens is serviceable at worst and coaching continuity is critical for Daniels development.
Given the current weaknesses I choose to err on the side of maintaining continuity and supporting Likens.
One last comment on the UCLA game. The defense didn't help much. This was the second consecutive road game after a very physical matchup against Utah. It's 2/3 of the way through the season and with the afore mentioned youth and limited scholarship players (lack of depth) I'm not surprised we had a letdown.
