Defense kept us alive in most every game up until UCLA. They held opponents to 7 points a game through Michigan State, played well at CAL. They kept us alive until the 4Q at Utah. They ran a wacky scheme vs Wazzu, but it worked. The PAC has some good offenses, and the O was going to have to deliver at some point, and has shown some improvement.

The slow starts on D vs CU. USC, UCLA, OSU were frustrating, and DG deserves some blame, but after some adjustments, they improved as the games went on, and we got back in most of them late. We need to be ready when the game starts.

I find it hard to lay the blame on Gonzales for the loss this week. He suffered a major loss in his family this week, was no doubt not giving his job all of his normal attention, and justifiably so. Suspending 5 starters for being late to a meeting didn't help the D get off to a good start either. I honestly think Jack Jones execution was the biggest issue the D had lat weekend. Hate to single out a player, but he had a rough weekend, getting beat for TD passes, and getting that PI call to end the game, on 4th down. I guy with 5 star physical talents should be better than that.

The D is still young, inexperienced, needs some more beef and a better pass rush up front, less mental errors in the secondary, but as a body of work in his first 2 years, the D seems on a great path. We have recruited well, rotated better, keeping guys fresh and getting players experience early, have a better scheme IMO, are recruiting better talent on D, and are getting contributions from the players earlier. Too bad we could not have Wren blowing up the middle for another season.
