I disagree on the one and done, 1996, & 97 were pretty good/ special seasons. ASU played great defense in both of those years. ASU had the magical 96 season of 11-1, only loss being to Ohio State in the Rose Bowl.
Then, in 1997, ASU went 9-3 overall and did it with a freshman quarterback by the name of Ryan Kealy. Had ASU beaten the U of A during the last game of the season, a game in which Kealy blew out his knee in the first half, the Sun Devils would've shared the Pac-10 Championship with Washington State, and Washington. ASU would've lost the 3 way tie to Washington State, who ASU beat, but WSU hadn't been to the Rose Bowl in the longer period of time, but ASU losing to Arizona cost that team a piece of the Pac-10 Championship. The Sun Devils were rumored to be headed to the Fiesta Bowl, had they won that game, but they didn't, sadly. ASU ended up beating a good Iowa team 17-7 in the Sun Bowl. ASU did this with a back up quarterback, Steve Campbell, who only threw 11 passes in the Sun Bowl game. ASU dominated the Hawkeyes on both lines of scrimmage in El Paso. So, that was a pretty damn good ASU team in 1997, going 9-3 overall, and 6-2 in Pac-10 play. Go Sun Devils!
