"I have to wonder if the philosophical differences of CHE and Likens was that he (Likens) wasn't leaning heavily enough on Eno. With that in mind, and assuming we'll go more run-first next year:"
I firmly believe and have good reason to - that the 'philosophical differences' are Likens not being nearly bold enough, daring enough and calling WAY too many side-to-side passes AND calling plays in which on say 3rd and 9 - a 4-5 yard pass and hope the player can make it. NO real imaginationeering strategies or even a list of tricky plays to loosen things up.
Just more sideline passes and throwing short when more was required. The really promising SR/JR offensive players were never really all brought to bear. Great offensive teams do NOT 'dink and dunk' to success.
The great programs don't 'take what the defense gives them' - they go out and demand/take what they want. Opponents KNOW that when say an Ohio St or Alabama comes to town and plan off that.
Spineless holdover Likens spun his failures time and time again in yakkety-yakk interviews. Herm gave this OC all the opportunity and room to rise up and succeed. Likens really never did.
Typical of the 'dead-ender' end-of-Graham-era coaches (after Graham blew out dozens of coaches - a lot of them have better-than-ASU jobs today). We'll see where Likens winds up.
ASU was in the mid-20s offensively. Herm wanted to see mid-30s. Nuff' said.
