I'm not being critical of your sentiment, but am pointing out that the PAC (and possibly, but less and less so, the Big 10) are the only conferences (fans, boosters, etc) that think this way.
The SEC started changing the calculus for everybody about 20 years ago, and today as an example, for all the supposed hatred fueling the Iron Bowl, Auburn fans would rather see Alabama make the CFP than any team outside the SEC. There's even pride fans of every other SEC team take in Alabama's recent success, as it validates "SEC is best" and "Vanderbilt would win the PAC 3 out of every 4 years" - which for SEC programs means more dollars and more butts in the seats. They'd rather have ESPN drooling over their conference and - more importantly, lobbying for votes on behalf of it - than get a random positive comment about their team on air.
Again, I'm not being critical of your comment. I get it. Just making the point that nobody in the PAC should be mystified that the conference gets left out of the so-called playoff 2 out of every 3 years when in truth, we actually celebrate the conference losing.
CFP Bids by conference (assuming favorites win today)
SEC - 7
ACC - 6
Big 10 - 4
Big 12 - 4
PAC - 2
