In 2007, Graham was the Tulsa HC and Gus Malzahn was his OC. Norvell was the OC understudy. Malzahn put up crazy numbers with his new zone read offense. I think it produced a 5,000 yard passing QB, a 1,000 yard rusher and three 1,000 yard receivers at year. It earned Malzahn his Auburn HC job.
Since Malzahn was unavailable to follow Graham to ASU, TG grabbed Norvell and instructed him to - Do it like Ole Gus. I always felt that a major component of Graham problems was that he spent a decade trying to recapture 2007. But defenses caught up with his zone read offense and and offenses learned how to exploit his blitz crazy defense. Norvell was smart enough to abandon the zone read as soon as he arrived in Memphis. Despite Norvellís first staff filled with ex-ASU staff members - Chip Long, Paul Randolph, Joe Lorig, Chris Ball - the offense and defense were different at Memphis. These coaches were smart enough to change with the times and the existing personnel.
