An organized, systemic approach to recruiting that hasn't been seen in decades, if ever. It creates a repeatable process that should produce results even as coaches change.
Building redundancy among the recruiters. For 2 years, AP was the recruiting Atlas. Adding Cain and Gill (and probably Hawkins and Hagan) has increased the recruiting firepower substantially and spread the load significantly. We can now sustain the loss of an AP with less catastrophic impacts on recruiting. Contrast this with losing Norvell and Long, and before that, Lubick.
A cutting edge defensive approach. The 3-3-5 is the future of defense. It is being played consistently at every level. It can match up against any offense you can name.
Combining a few of these...we are recruiting with a specific purpose on defense. TG really lost his way in signing guys that didn't fit his scheme. That won't happen here.
Higher levels of self-scouting with respect to the staff. Herm reviewed everything and identified weaknesses on the staff. Whether Gill, Hagan, and Hill work out is certainly an open question, but Herm clearly hired with a purpose. The guys he hired on paper target the previously identified weaknesses.
Everything is a bottom up approach. This should create the circumstances necessary to plug and play coaches and players. If they improve OL recruiting, it could move the win curve towards 8 for the average season.
