Edwards is the one that stated that he wanted to go old school. Fullback, TEs, huddles, ball control. Hill was hired to bring Edwards offense to life.
But if you look at the offense roster, Edwards has assembled a custom-made spread offense. The Pirate would kill the conference with this collection of talent. I am not advocating such a move, but this is the reason the spread became so successful.
The spread was born because most schools could not come up with a quality O-line to compete with the Ohio States and Alabamas of the college football elite. So the spread line utilizes very wide gaps and zone blocking. The line just needs to get in the way of the defenders. Meanwhile, receivers spread the field to make the defense stay back. The QB learns simple pre-snap reads and check offs.
Leach once said that he could teach the system to a QB in 2 weeks. Watching him him assemble 3 star linemen and a new QB every year, I now believe him.
