Today, the individual is bigger than the game. I watch knucklehead DBs go through childish histrionics every time they break up a pass - even after they draw a flag and hurt their team. NFL players wear expensive watches during the game to call attention to themselves. Sideline news hostesses drone on with scripted player interviews while the game goes on in the background. Sports Illustrated has become People Magazine. The energy and the beauty of the sport now takes a back seat to the media circus. And Walton spend 2 hours with his Look At Me act that includes ridiculing his TV partner.
Saturday, we were out with out of town guests. Thank god for iPones, I kept up with the game and knew that ASU dug itself a 22 point hole. But on the way home I listed to Tim Healey call the last 10 minutes of the game. His focus on the game and on the electric energy of the players and the crowd had my heart pounding. I couldn’t wait to get home to watch the game.
Watching the recorded “Bill Walton Show” could not compare. His travel log distractions, look at my clothing, let me tell a story about life distractions overshadowed this classic ASU comeback that was going on behind him. As Walton droned on about some personal experience or the color or Sedona dirt, Verge scores the winning basket and the ASU TEAM defense protected the win. I am glad I heard Healey call the end. It was more exciting with him describing the action than it was with Walton ignoring it.
Yea, I know - Get off my lawn.
