I was a 9 year old little boy who was a devoted Pirate fan who put Roberto Clemente on a pedestal and for good reason. His play was poetry in motion the way he played right field, threw runners out on the bases with ease, & oh that gated run like no other baseball player. I faked being sick to watch a game in the 1971 World Series against the Baltimore Orioles because it was a daytime first pitch. I can still remember listening to the radio on that New Year"s Eve and hearing of his death. Roberto Clemente was a special man.
The following Spring the voice of the Pittsburgh Pirates, Bob Prince, said the Pirates could still win without Clemente. That young baseball fanatic was so mad he found KYW 1060 and the voice of the Philadelphia Phillies, Richie Ashburn, and eventually became a Mike Schmidt, Greg Luzinski, & Steve Carlton fan.
