Back in the 1980s and 1990s, before all the football networks and internet coverage, not too many on the East Coast knew about the Sun Devils. In 1987, one of my business pleasures was to travel to Boston to validate a contract manufacturer of one of our FDA controlled products. Every morning I would head to the North End for Italian pastry and some good rich coffee.
One morning as I was leaving Mike’s Pastry, I heard, “Hey Sun Devil, give us a hand.” Some old guy sporting an ancient Sun Devil windbreaker had spotted mine. I helped him and Mike’s baker load a big beautiful wedding cake into a van. The old guy thanked me and we talked ASU sports for a couple minutes.
Before leaving he said, “Nobody knows sh#t about ASU out here. I made a killing betting on the Rose Bowl. It paid for my Daughter’s wedding.” Then he drove away shouting Go Devils out the window.
