WhtmtndvlŐs string of Sun Devils with successful NFL careers has me reminiscing about an under-appreciated Sun Devil.
David Dixon was a young New Zealand rugby player that first came to America to learn football at a JUCO. He then transferred to ASU in 1990 and played DL. I think the ASU roster listed him at something like 6-7, 335 lbs. Big, fast, strong, raw talent. After one game, I spotted him leaving the stadium in his uniform and wanted to complement him for his game performance. As I approach this massive player that just destroyed the opposition, he turned towards me. Inside that Sun Devil helmet was a young kidŐs face with a big, warm smile that I will never forget.
After a couple years on practice squads, Mr Dixon was signed by the Viking and moved to OG. He became a mainstay in their starting lineup. He was listed at 343 to 354 lbs during most of his Viking career. Dixon retired after an 11 year Viking career, 152 games with 134 starts. Every time that I would watch him play, I would remember that young kidŐs face and his big warm smile.
David was recently inducted into the Polynesian Hall of Fame and it went pretty much unnoticed by ASU and the local press.
