The year was July, 1962. I was 12 years old at the time when I met Coach Winkles. I was a member of the 1962 Casa Grande All Stars baseball team and we were getting ready to play in the state championship game. The Little League tournament people put on a luncheon for our team and the Phoenix team we were to play for the championship. The luncheon was held at a plus Phoenix resort location. Bobby Winkles was the guest speaker. I don't remember too much of his speech, other than to go and play hard, listen to our coaches and to have fun. Once he was done, we then were entertained with a visit from Wallace & Ladmo. They put on some short skits and then passed out Ladmo bags to all the players. It was fun time had by all. For what it is worth, our team won the state championship. We then went up to play in the next round of the tournament in Salt Lake City and won that too. Next stop was Vancouver, Canada. Unfortunately, our string of wins stopped there. If we had won that tournament, then it was on the Willamsport, PA for all the marbles. To this day, whenever I hear or read about coach Winkles, I always think of the day when a 12 year old boy and his teammates met coach Winkles. Thank you for letting me respond. RIP Coach Winkles.
