My sophomore year I was living in Best C. One day Bobby Winkles walked into the lobby and just started talking to a bunch of us.
How lucky he was to be offered the first varsity coaching job at the new Arizona State University. He was only 29 with no coaching experience. Then he learned that his practice field was to be a vacant lot donated by the state. His first recruiting class literally built the program from the ground up. Conditioning drills consisted of dragging logs over the site to smooth out the surface. Warmups consisted of forming lines to walk the field and pull bullhead stickers. Winkles would encourage them with, “If you don’t get them now, they will get you when you slide.” With a big smile he said, “These kids didn’t just play ASU baseball, they were ASU baseball. It was their program and they had much invested as I did.”
About sprinting to the field positions and home plate. ASU was the newest university in the nation. All the major sports had new young coaches that wanted to put the newest university in the fastest growing state on the map. SPEED would be their trademark. Wulk had fast break basketball. Kush had some of the fastest skill position players in college football. Baldy Castello topped them all with world class sprinters. His relay teams shocked the world when a school was able to assemble relays that beat Olympic team times. So Winkles said that there was no way he players were going to mosey up to the plate or walk onto the field.
Yep, those were great times! We will never see another Bobby Winkles.
