ASU has not scheduled a home and home with an ACC opponent since North Carolina in 2002, & 03. The situation involving the 2003 game at North Carolina might be part of the reason for not scheduling an ACC opponent. To say that ASU was "homered" that day would be an understatement. ASU had something like 600 yards of offense, North Carolina has close to 350 yards of offense. Every time ASU got into North Carolina's red zone, you could count on a flag being thrown on the next play. It was usually a holding penalty on ASU. There was a brutal offensive pass interference call on ASU in the fourth quarter. ASU had 16 penalties on the game, UNC had 3. It was so bad, that Bill Dooley (the brother of Vince Dooley), and a former coach at North Carolina, apologized to Don Bocchi of the Sun Devil Club during the game.
In spite of the homer referees, ASU drove 61 yards in the last 36 seconds of the game, and scored a game winning touchdown pass from Andrew Walter to Skyler Fulton on the last play of the game. ASU won 33-31. Dirk Koetter, ASU's coach, didn't shake hands with North Carolina's coach after the game, Koetter said that he forgot to shake his hand in the excitement of the moment, but I think Koetter dissed UNC's coach on purpose. He was pissed, as was every ASU representative at the home job that kept that game close.
I know it 17 years ago, but I wonder if the lack of a scheduling of another ACC opponent has been due to that bad experience from the 2003 ASU vs. UNC game in Chapel Hill? ACC teams that I would like to see ASU schedule home and homes with would be Georgia Tech, Clemson, Virginia Tech, Florida State, and Miami. Go Sun Devils!
