The bottom line is ASU was a good football team playing in the WAC. People didn't want to play them, especially, if they were from a power conference. Those who did, were usually "bottom feeders" in that conference. Teams like Oregon State, Washington State, Kansas State, TCU, Northwestern, Wisconsin, and Minnesota agreed to play ASU. The Sun Devils usually beat them.

The big boys didn't want anything to do with playing ASU, just like they don't want to play a team like Boise State today. Boise State is a good football team, but teams don't want to play them because if they lose, like Florida State did this season, they are criticized for losing to a team from a non-Power 5 conference.

So, I don't know if Bear Bryant said that or not, but I wouldn't be surprised if he did, there was nothing to gain for Alabama to play ASU in those days. Go Sun Devils!
