With way too much time on my hands, I started thinking about the remainder of the year and what the cancellation of football and basketball might mean and it is scary.
The cancellation of March Madness and the loss of the TV revenue from that event will severely impact athletic departments across the country. Then imagine if ASU has to scrub FB and BB this fall. The return of season ticket sales coupled with the various donation levels would be huge. Then add the impact of the loss of the TV revenue, day ticket sales, concession sales, team paraphernalia, parking fees, and so forth. Not to mention the impact of the shutdown and it's impact on sales.
There is also the ongoing cost of the department salaries and the housing and feeding of the players.
An unknown cost is the loss of momentum that we would have in our football and basketball programs. It has been quite a while since I have been this encouraged by the quality of our coaching staff and the players they have recruited. I am really looking forward to the season for both sports and feel we can really be good.
I am by nature an optimist but these are sobering and challenging times for college sports. I am certainly glad that I am not the AD here or at any Div 1 university.
