I love to see locals like Foster and Randall McDaniel sign with ASU, but why should they? Has ASU kept up its part of the bargain? Local signing must be a time-honored tradition. At ASU, it has not been. Since Kush was fired over 40 years ago, we have had a string of carpetbagger coaches that paid varying attention to local HS programs. Some went so far as to insult local HS coaches and get ASU banned from HS campuses.
ASU has even had school presidents that have attempted to destroy its football school image. The result has become a generic football program with high coaching turnover and a self destructing attitude toward its own traditions. So local players can now choose to play in a generic 50,000 seat stadium, wear generic black/white/grey/yellow/gold/maroon uniforms, know that they will have a new coach before they leave school, and play in the heat. Letís be realistic; they can get that deal anywhere. The school makes very little attempt to bond with the large metro population. We see that as ticket buyers. The players and their parents have the same experience at the recruiting level as well. Recruiting starts at the family level, not when the kid is 18.
