I was looking for a different story when I ran across this one. When the analysis is broadened to all 4 and 5 star players CA, TX and Florida even out a bit.
For years, I would download the ESPN 300 into a pivot table and filter by state, position, position by state, etc.. About a decade ago CA started losing its prominence as the top spot for talent. The shift to Florida among the Big Three continues. And other SEC region states such as Georgia have developed more talent landing on the Top 300. That might have been evidence of scouting site SEC bias. It may be because the region places more emphasis on big time football.
And it may be due to a de-emphasis of football in the California urban areas. The demographics within the LAUSD, which accounts for close to 750,000 students, now leans heavily towards Latino. Football participation may be giving way to other sports. In addition, the number of charter schools is increasing in CA. Most concentrate on education and not football.
