The German fighter planes had been sent to the south of France because they thought the invasion could hit them there. There were 2 or 3 left with the German Cmdr who was going to lead them down to join their main outfit in S. France. When the attack started they made a pass over the beaches and then headed south. I believe their strongest ground forces were near Calais which is the narrowest pt between France & England. Whatever, they got outfoxed and outfought on D-Day
German were very mechanized at the start of the war. If they were using horses it was probably because by mid '44 they had lost a lot of equipment from bombing raids and also on the Eastern Front.
