Watch John Wayne WW2 movies. Dude used everyone he knew to keep out of serving. Jimmy Stewart flew many missions over Germany piloting his B-17. Clark Gable was a Sgt & side gunner on another B-17. Some guys said the flak over Germany was so thick it looked like you could walk on it. John Ford ran a film unit in the Pacific and was on Midway during the Japanese attack. John Huston (Treasure of Sierra Madre, Asphalt Jungle) ran a film unit in Italy during that campaign. George Stevens (Shane, Story of Anne Frank) ran a film unit that went from D-Day to Berlin. Filmed the opening of the first concentration camps near Munich/Nuremburg area. Other directors also had film units that worked the front lines in Europe. All these guys could have stayed in Hollywood but volunteered to run units to film the actual war.
