The movies make it look like a big American Army hit the beaches. In reality, it was young kids, shop clerks, mail men, factory workers and many others that took up arms to defend America.
My Grandfather died during the Great Depreciation leaving my Grandmother with 5 young children to feed. My Dad was the youngest boy. In 1941 he graduated from high school in 3 years so that he could move out and join the CCC. They gave him room, board and work clothes so he was able to send $25 of his $30 monthly pay home. Then came Pearl Harbor. Although he was under age, he enlisted and found himself a Machinist Mate on a Coast Guard Cutter patrolling the Philippine. He kept a photo album throughout the war. Amazing photos. His Coast Guard Cutter was manned by a crew of skinny teenagers. I swear a couple crewmen could not have been more than 16 years old. Nobody but the Captain was old enough to drink or to vote.
